Checklist for SLA Job Duties

Work on homework assignments AFTER all other duties have been finished.

Duties at the START & DURING your shift:

CLOCK IN on the on screen TimeClock keypad.

Put your nametag on.

Write your name on the whiteboard behind the Helpdesk.

Get oriented by asking the previous SLA what’s going on & what needs to be done.  First shift, check for any notes (including lab log) left by last shift.

Check the SLA Lab Log (www.uu.edu/computing/sla).

Check posted Reserved Labs lists (C-2 and C-3) for classes that are scheduled during your shift.

At least 10 minutes before a reserving class begins, put reserving teacher/time/reserved signs beside classroom(s) doors.

At least 10 minutes before a reserving class is scheduled, students working in the lab (who are not in the reserving class) need to be notified by announcing:   “This lab will be reserved for a class beginning at XXXX.  Anyone NOT in this class must leave in five minutes.”  Do this politely, but so everyone in the lab can hear!

A few minutes before a class begins, ask the reserving teacher if any special assistance is needed.

Change out any lab reserved signs if the lab(s) is now open.

Make rounds throughout the open labs several times during your shift (every 15 minutes or so depending on busyness).

Straighten the chairs; pick up paper on floors and off tables.

Restart or reboot any computers that are “hung.”

Close any programs that might be running unattended in any of the labs.

Log off anyone who forgot to do so.

Turn on any monitors that might be off.

For any computer problems that you cannot resolve report the computer problem to Molly via the Lab Log, a written note, or email and place a sign on the computer notifying students that it is not working.

Collect any "found" disks in the labs. Write date found on disk. Contact owner if possible.  Put disks in stack at Helpdesk.

Check printer for paper level. REMEMBER:  Only put paper purchased for lab use in the laser printer.

Check printers for low toner. If toner is low, notify Molly.  SLAs should not replace toner cartridges WITHOUT permission from supervisors.

If mail arrives during your shift in the afternoon, sort it into staff mailboxes.

When Work Demand is LOW during your shift:

Circulate through the labs.  Pick up trash on the floor, at printers, and on desks.

Check cabinet for low supplies (for example:  printer paper, Scantron sheets, lab toner cartridges).  Write down any that are low, indicating item number, description, brand, etc. Leave list in Molly’s door mailbox.

If Scantron sheets are low at the Helpdesk, get forms from supply cabinet. Count in stacks of 10’s and place in Helpdesk cabinet.

Check computer paper supply at the Helpdesk and restock if needed.

At the END of your shift:

Take nametag off and leave at SLA Helpdesk.

Erase your name from the white board.

Leave note or stay long enough to inform incoming worker(s) of anything significant they need to know or do/finish on the next shift.  Leave a message in the Lab Log.

CLOCK OUT on the on screen TimeClock keypad.

Change out lab signs if applicable.

(Last shift only) Leave computers and screens on.

(Last shift only) Turn off all lights in the labs, close and lock all outside lab doors, and empty paper trash cans if they are full.

Other THINGS to keep in mind:

Become familiar with the PCs in the labs and basic software demands students may have.

If you have to leave the lab during your shift, let a supervisor know.

If you cannot work your shift, find someone who can (use Lab Log, email, phone).

Please sign & date any notes you give to Molly.

Be early!

Be positive and helpful at ALL times!

Help each other!

Serve others eagerly!

SMILE!!!
