Giving Opportunities

Union 2010

In an era marked by scientific progress and technological change, excellence in the sciences is not merely an option for tomorrow’s college graduates. Any institution which seeks to prepare young men and women to make an impact on their communities and their culture must be prepared to offer excellence in science education in terms of faculty, programs and facilities.

The science programs of Union University have created a remarkable record in preparing graduates for careers of scientific achievement and service. Indeed, since 1997, every faculty-recommended health science student at Union has gained acceptance to medical school or professional graduate study. That is only possible because Union has assembled an outstanding science faculty which attracts excellent students. Yet maintaining that record of excellence is a growing challenge which requires constant improvement and bold investment.

Thanks to a generous lead gift from Dr. and Mrs. Roy L. White, the University is in the early stages of developing a 63,000 square foot, three story building on the new West Campus that will house Union’s biology, chemistry and nursing on three floors. With construction costs in excess of $200 per square foot and the expensive furnishings required to outfit research laboratories, this project presents many opportunities for significant investment that will touch the lives of future generations of students. A portion of the cost of this important new facility is still being sought.

White Hall will house Union’s biology and chemistry departments as well as the School of Nursing.

A floor plan of 63,345 gross square feet will be divided among three floors.

Space will be reserved for three dedicated undergraduate student research suites.

Faculty and staff will have 42 offices and three conference rooms.

Among the 20 teaching laboratories: a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility.

Wireless hubs will serve the computer systems.

White Hall will support the highest levels of undergraduate study found anywhere, including patient mannequins and other teaching aides rarely found in such settings.
