Professor to appear on ABC’s “20/20”

A camera crew for ABC’s “20/20” filmed Union professor Steve Beverly’s advertising class for an upcoming segment on the national news show.
Steve Beverly, assistant professor of communication arts, was recently flown to New York, along with four of the biggest game show winners in history, for an interview with producers of ABC’s “20/20.”

When he’s not teaching class or covering Bulldog Basketball, Beverly hosts a daily information website (http://tvgameshows.net) that includes updates of all game shows, industry news, and interviews with contestants. The website, which has been in operation since July of 1999, has logged more than 1.2 million hits, and has brought much attention to Beverly by media all over the country for his expertise on the game show phenomenon.

Beverly and the four contestants had all been profiled in a New York Times magazine story and were asked by “20/20” for exclusivity until the show is aired. Beverly has already been contacted by competitor news shows, “60 Minutes II” and “Extra.”

During the interview, which lasted four hours, Beverly offered insight into the game show craze .

“People love to play games and when the stakes are raised to a million, no one has seen that kind of money offered before and that gets people’s attention,” said Beverly.

A few days after the interview in New York, a producer and camera crew for the show paid a visit to the Union campus, filming one of Beverly’s advertising classes that he teaches.

“If it gets Union University two minutes on TV, it has made it all worth it,” said Beverly.

The interview aired on January 5, 2001 - view transcript at http://abcnews.go.com/sections/2020/2020/transcripts/2020_010105_knowitall_trans.html
