Union announces speakers for 2001 Union Forum Series

Kay Coles James Political activist Kay Coles James and Washington, D.C. journalist Fred Barnes will be the featured speakers for Union University’s 2001 Union Forum Series this spring. Kay Coles James, an active participant in the development , implementation and analysis of American public policy for more than two decades, will speak on the university’s campus Friday, Mar. 9

Former senior vice president of the Family Research Council, James served under President Bush as associate director for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and as assistant secretary for public affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She was appointed by President Reagan and reappointed by President Bush as Commissioner on the National Commission on Children.

In the private sector, James has serve d in several key positions including as executive vice president and chief operating officer with the One to One Partnership, a national umbrella organization for mentoring programs and as director of public affairs for the National Right to Life Committee. James is currently the senior fellow for The Citizenship Project at the Heritage Foundation, a leading conservative research and educational institute based in Washington.

Fred BarnesFred Barnes, executive editor of the Washington, D.C.-based publication, The Weekly Standard, will speak at the second Union Forum, scheduled for Monday, April 30.

Barnes, who has covered the White House and Supreme Court for several well-known newspapers including the Washington Star and the Baltimore Sun, is host, along with Mort Kondracke, of the “Beltway Boys” on the Fox News Channel. From 1988 to 1998, he was a regular panelist on the McLaughlin Group. Barnes has also appeared on Nightline, Meet the Press, Face the Nation, and the News Hour With Jim Lehrer.

Designed to be a f o rum for lively conversation with the nation’s leaders and thinkers, the Union Forum hosts two speakers each spring. Both luncheons will begin at noon in the university’s Coburn Dining Room.
