A Welcome from the Provost
Carla Sanderson

The worth of an institution of higher learning is best measured in the classroom. It is there, in the exchange between professor and student, where its purpose is found and its distinctive mission is carried out.

At Union University, the classroom is ever-changing, being extended and enhanced, not static and predictable but dynamic and new. The classroom is both curricular and co-curricular, traditional and innovative, time-tested and at the same time futuristic. The one constant in it all is a clear sense of purpose and identity: education at Union University aims to provide Christ-centered higher education that promotes excellence and character development in service to Church and society.

The classrooms at Union are the responsibility of an outstanding group of men and women committed to excellence, focused on the good that comes from a pursuit of God and how His truth impacts the world we live in today.

In this endeavor, faculty are a team working together across disciplines, exploring what it means to articulate and advance a distinctively Christian worldview as a liberal arts institution of higher education. For a closer look at what we are learning, I commend to you the faculty's recent publication, co-edited by our president and a professor, a work entitled Shaping a Christian Worldview (D.S. Dockery, G. A. Thornbury).

In the pages of this website I present to you that faculty. Leading the way with widely recognized scholarship in theology and worldview development is the university's 15th president, both an outstanding academician and highly sought after leader in Christian higher education, David S. Dockery. You will read about the work of faculty through their administration of various centers that are highly co-curricular in nature, functioning to bring to campus today's most relevant people to discuss with students the day's most pressing issues. You will see the faculty's work with students through the endeavors of undergraduate research, intercultural study at home and abroad, and service-learning. You will note the academy’s significant leadership roles played by this faculty across the region and nation. You will read about the advancement of knowledge in many traditional disciplines through noteworthy scholarship, published and presented widely.

The faculty of Union University is privileged to take its place among colleagues from other very fine institutions as together we strive to educate future generations of responsible, intellectual, moral individuals. Thank you for recognizing with me the team of faculty at Union who is accomplishing much toward that end.
