In a game that was even at the half and at the end of regulation, Union fell short in overtime in a 68-61 loss at Lyon College. The Bulldogs fell to 10-9 overall and 0-4 in the TranSouth while Lyon improved to 8-9 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The score was 22 all at the half and tied at 55 at the end of regulation. However, Lyon took control in overtime by outscoring Union 13-6 in the extra period. Union committed 24 turnovers in the game. Turnovers on three straight possessions late in regulation caused Union to loose a six point lead with less than two minutes remaining. With time running out, a shot attempt by Chima Abakwue fell short sending the game to overtime. Lyon scored 21 points off turnovers. Neither team shot well as both were under 46% from the field and 28% from behind the arc.
Jason Donaldson of Lyon led all scorers with 20 points and Brandon Byrd added 19 points for the Scots. Norris Weintz led Lyon with 10 rebounds. For Union, Derrick Underwood tallied a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Bruno Martinessi and Chima Abakwue added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Union’s next contest is Saturday, February 1 when they host Cumberland University at 4:00 p.m.
