The Union University Bulldog baseball team ran into a little trouble as the visiting Trevecca Nazarene Trojans took 2-of-3 games from the Bulldogs this weekend. Trevecca Nazarene won game one 12-7 and game two 4-3 in 11 innings, before the Bulldogs rallied to win the final game 3-1.
In Friday night's game, Trevecca led 10-4 in the eighth inning before the game was suspended due to rain. The game was resumed at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Trevecca scored five runs off of Cory Engle in the top of the second inning and Union never recovered. Previously unbeaton Engle took the loss to fall to 4-1 on the season. He allowed seven runs, six earned, 11 hits over 3.2 innings. Matt Glass pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on 2 hits. Nash Powell and Steven Sweat each allowed an earned run as they pitched the final two innings. Keith Black for Trevecca earned the win with 7.0 innings of eight hit ball allowing four runs. Scott Wiggins pitched the final two innings for Trevecca allowing three runs to cross. Roger Cook and Chip Briggs led Union as Cook went 3-for-3 on in the game and Briggs went 4-for-4. Cook tallied a double which was his 18th of the season. That double set Union's new career doubles mark at 69, breaking Jeff Wyatt's old mark of 68. Cook now has 70 doubles in his career. Justin Curtis led Trevecca with a 4-for-4 performance, three RBI and three runs scored.
Game two looked to belong to Union as freshman Steven Sweat drove in Union's three runs on a two-out, bases loaded double in the fourth inning to give Uniona 3-1 lead. Matt Gibbs pitched a solid six innings of work to hold Trevecca to just one unearned run on four hits. However, freshman Garrett Pepper came in to close the game and allowed the first to batters in the seventh to reach base with a walk and a hit batsman. Those two runs scored and this seven inning contest was tied at 3 runs apiece. Andy Davidson relieved Pepper to pitch the final 3.1 innings of the game. He allowed the eventual game winning run in the top of the 11th inning to drop his record to 3-2 on the season. Adam Duncan (3-1) earned the win for Trevecca with 1.1 innings of no-hit ball to hold the Bulldogs at bay. Jed Thomas, Pepper, Cook, and Briggs, each tallied two hits for Union. The Bulldogs left 17 runners on base during this 11-inning game. Colby Rainey led Trevecca with two hits.
In the final game, Union trailed first for the third straight game. But just like the previous game, the Bulldogs rallied to take a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth. This time, the 3 run lead held up as junior transfer Todd Winchester pitched a seven inning complete game allowing just four hits and one run while striking out seven batters. Winchester improved to 4-1 on the season. B.J. Jenkins (2-4) took the loss for Trevecca. Union tallied just three hits but scored on RBI hits by Cook and Pepper. Cook added double to his career mark that now stands at 70. His 19 doubles this season are just seven behind Wyatt's 26 last season.
