Season Outlook
The Union (Tenn.) University men’s golf team enters the 2011-12 season looking for a third straight TranSouth Conference Title and a third straight trip to the NAIA National Championships. Union will have to replace three golfers off last season’s team that helped win the league title and that also played in the national tournament. However, Union returns its top golfer in junior Brett Barry, who was named the TranSouth Golfer of the Year last season. Union also returns Steven Coffelt following a very successful freshman, playing in the conference and national tournaments.
The senior class includes Jesper Swedenborg and newcomer Kyle Long, who transferred in this season. They will look provide major contributions in their final year of college.
Along with Barry, Ryan Mantooth and Ben Waits fill out the junior class. Mantooth and Waits will hope to take that next step as the join the group of upperclassmen.
Four sophomores line the roster with Chris Hawks, Matthew McSwain and Charlie Pittman joining Coffelt. All four guys gained valuable experience last season as freshmen and will hope to show even more progress in 2011-12.
The lone freshman is Andrew Knight who enters his first season of college golf with high expectations. Knight will have the opportunity to contribute to the team early in his career.
Union head coach Andy Rushing has led his team to four conference titles in the last six seasons, including each of the past two. The Bulldogs will be playing in their final season of NAIA competition this year as Union has been approved to begin the NCAA DII membership process.
