Union Basketball Signs Former Gibson County
Standout
Jackson, Tenn.- The Union
University Bulldogs have recently added one more player to its
successful lineup for the 2001-2002 season. Michael Palmer, a
1999 grad uate of Gibson County High School, has signed to
continue his basketball career at Union. Originally signing
with the University of Southern Mississippi as a freshman,
Palmer transferred to Bevill State Community College in
Jasper, Ala., during the same year. While at Bevill, Palmer
averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks per game.
Listed as one of the top 10 post players in the country by a
CNN Sports Illustrated poll, the 6-9 forward's previous career
at Gibson County High School included receiving an honorable
mention as a McDonald's All-American in addition to an
All-State selection both his junior and senior seasons at
Gibson County.
A sophomore, Palmer will join the Bulldogs as the team sets
its sights for a fifth straight NAIA National Tournament
appearance, and hopes to help continue that streak during his
three seasons at Union.
"We are very happy to sign one of the best players to
come out of West Tennessee in the past several years,"
said Ralph Turner, Union's head coach. "Michael is a
great kid who will make an immediate impact on our team."
