Union Basketball Signs Former Gibson County Standout

Jackson, Tenn.- The Union University Bulldogs have recently added one more player to its successful lineup for the 2001-2002 season. Michael Palmer, a 1999 graduate of Gibson County High School, has signed to continue his basketball career at Union. Originally signing with the University of Southern Mississippi as a freshman, Palmer transferred to Bevill State Community College in Jasper, Ala., during the same year. While at Bevill, Palmer averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks per game.

Listed as one of the top 10 post players in the country by a CNN Sports Illustrated poll, the 6-9 forward's previous career at Gibson County High School included receiving an honorable mention as a McDonald's All-American in addition to an All-State selection both his junior and senior seasons at Gibson County.

A sophomore, Palmer will join the Bulldogs as the team sets its sights for a fifth straight NAIA National Tournament appearance, and hopes to help continue that streak during his three seasons at Union.

"We are very happy to sign one of the best players to come out of West Tennessee in the past several years," said Ralph Turner, Union's head coach. "Michael is a great kid who will make an immediate impact on our team."
