Union basketball signs Alabama Junior
College All-Star for 2001 season
Jackson, Tenn. - Union
University has added Boaz, Ala. native Derrick Underwood to
its 2001 roster. Underwood spent his past two seasons at the
University of Alabama-Birmingham and Bevill State Community
College, respectively. While at Bevill State, this 6-foot-6,
235 lb. power forward averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds per
game while shooting 60 percent from the field and 72 percent
from the free throw line.
In 1999, Underwood graduated from Boaz High School and
signed with UAB, but after only one season, transferred to
Bevill State where he was selected to the Alabama junior
college all-star team. As a high school player in Alabama, he
was a first team all-state selection for three consecutive
seasons and was also named to the USA Today High School
Honorable Mention All-American team.
"Derrick brings a combination of strength and
athleticism that will be a great asset to our team," said
Union head coach Ralph Turner. Underwood, majoring in
communications, joins up again with Bevill State teammate
Michael Palmer at Union in hopes of continuing their winning
ways by helping to lead the Bulldogs to their fifth
consecutive national tournament.
