Union Soccer Experiencing Best Season Ever
The Union Bulldogs are in the TranSouth
Conference tournament for the first time in the three-year history
of the program. Union’s overall record of 15-4 and their
conference record of 5-2 gave the Bulldogs a second place finish
in the regular season TranSouth standings.
This season has seen the Bulldogs set new
school records in almost every category. Their record of 15-4
overall and 5-2 in the conference were their best ever. The
Bulldogs’ 9 shutouts this season shattered the old record of 2
set last year. Sophomore goalkeeper, Jeff Lean, has produced all
nine of the shutouts in only 15 games played. His goals against
average is 0.64, that is 2nd in the NCCAA. Union’s
total goals against average is 0.89, which puts them top ten in
the NAIA. Joesphet Phiri, a sophomore from Zambia, set the school
record for goals in a season with 19 and also leads the team in
total points. Phiri leads the NCCAA with a 1.50 goal per game
average.
The Bulldogs will travel to Birmingham,
Alabama for the conference tournament on November 1-2. Union will
open up with Birmingham Southern College, who finished the season
10-9 overall and 5-2 in the conference, at 7:00 PM Wed. November
1st. Union opened the season at
Birmingham Southern College with Southern winning 2-1 in overtime.
Union’s head coach, Dr. Darin White knows this tournament is
very important. Union needs to win to advance to the NAIA Region
XI Tournament. This tournament also brings a more personal
importance for Coach White, as he will battle against his Alma
matter, Birmingham Southern, a team that he has never beaten.
