JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/29/2007 - The Union University baseball has been selected by the TranSouth coaches to finish fourth in the TranSouth Preseason Baseball Poll. Union comes off an injury-plagued season in which they placed seventh in last year's regular season.
Union graduated eight players from last year’s team, including three starters on the infield and one starting pitcher. However, Union head coach Brent Fronabarger has five returning starters on defense, and three starting pitchers to help put Union back at the top of the TranSouth Conference.
In fact, three of the top five hitters from 2007 are returning, including the leading hitter, Judson Powers. Powers, the former Humboldt High School standout hit .375 with 12 doubles, eight homeruns, and 55 RBI last season.
Union also returns their top three pitchers last year according to ERA. Powers, James Brasfield (Humboldt HS), and Greg Abram combined for 15 of Union 33 wins last season.
Union opens the 2008 season at Fesmire Field, the home field for the Union Bulldogs, on Friday, February 8 versus Georgetown College (Ky.).
