Union Volleyball Signs Givens for 2008 Season

JACKSON, Tenn. - 12/3/2007 - The Union University volleyball team has added their first recruit for the 2008 volleyball season. Katie Givens, who will graduate in May of 2008 from Franklin Road Academy in Nashville, will join Union next fall as a Pre-Med major.

“I felt like the volleyball scholarship was just the right opportunity to take,” says Givens. “Volleyball is something I love, and the choice just seemed so obvious. Union is where I am supposed to be.”

Givens, a 5-foot libero, comes to Union from Franklin Road Academy where she played two seasons of volleyball. She also ran track and was a member of the bowling team for one year. During her freshman and sophomore seasons in high school, Givens played volleyball and ran track at Unicoi County High School. In her high school volleyball career, she was named All-District, All-Conference, and All-Tournament as a sophomore. Following her senior year, she was named All-District. Givens also helped lead her traveling volleyball team, the Cobra Juniors, to the 2005 Silver Division Title.

Union president Dr. David S. Dockery states, “Katie Givens is a wonderful young lady who will make a splendid contribution to the Union University student community. Not only is she a fine volleyball player, but a good student and a terrific person. We are so thankful that Katie has chosen Union University.”

“Katie is a defensive specialist who will provide us depth on the defensive side of the ball,” says Union head coach Steven Gream. “She has a hunger to play hard and learn at the defensive specialist position, which will strengthen our already solid defense. We are proud to have her as part of our 2008 team.”
