HENDERSON, Tenn. - 1/24/2008 - The Union University Bulldogs, riding a two game winning streak, fell on Thursday night at Freed-Hardeman University 90-88. Union dropped to 9-8 on the season and 3-4 in league play. Freed-Hardeman improved to 11-5 overall and 3-4 in league play.
This win for Freed-Hardeman snapped an 11-game winning streak for Union over the Lions, dating back to February of 2003.
Freed-Hardeman open the game on fire from the field. The Lions rode 66-percent shooting from the field, including 58-percent (7-12) from behind the arc, to a 51-44 halftime lead.
In the second half, Union rallied to take their biggest lead of the game at eight points. Freed-Hardeman responded to tied the game up at 88-88 with one minute to play. Union missed on their attempt to take the lead in the final minute. This left Freed-Hardeman with the ball and 25 seconds on the clock. With seven seconds left, Freed-Hardeman's Mike McCutchen was fouled on his drive to the basket. McCutchen sank two free throws to give the Lions a 90-88 lead. Union's Tony Brown quickly advanced the ball up the court, but his three-point attempt from the corner went just long of the back of the iron.
Union was led by Brian Lake with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Matt Neaville added 18 points, Tony Brown scored 17 points, while Ryan Merriman and Tacuma Alexander each added 12 points. Union shot 41-percent from the field, including 30-percent (10-33) from behind the arc. Union sank all 12 of their free throws on the night.
Freed-Hardeman was led by Zach Frey with 20 points. Logan Greer added 16 points, Kurtis Brown and Tyler Jennings scored 12 each, and Cedric Austin added 10 points. Freed-Hardeman finished the game shooting 53-percent from the field, 42-percent (8-19) from behind the arc, and 86-percent (18-21) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be another road game at Blue Mountain College (Miss.) on Saturday, January 26. The men will play at 4:00 pm, preceded by the women's game at 2:00 pm.
