Union Men Win Second Straight Behind Neaville's Career Night

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/23/2008 - The Union University Bulldogs earned their second straight win with a 106-105 double overtime win at Crichton College (Tenn.) on Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 15-12 overall and 9-8 in the TranSouth. Crichton dropped to 16-13 on the season and 10-9 in league play.

Union's Matt Neaville posted a career high in points for the second straight game. His 37 points in Union's win over Freed-Hardeman was topped by a 40-point performance versus Crichton. Neaville also tied the Union record for three pointers made in a game with 10. He has 19 made three pointers in his past two games. For the season, Neaville has made 132 three pointers. His 132 made threes moves him into second place in Union history (Clay Gray-131), and just two three pointers away from tying the school record for three pointers made in a season (Chima Abakwue-134).

Union trailed by six points at the half, 31-25, in what looked to be a low-scoring game. However, in the second half both teams exploded, especially from behind the arc. The two teams combined for nine made three pointers in the first half. But in the final 30 minutes, including two overtimes, Union and Crichton sank a combined 24 threes. Union outscored Crichton 55-49 in the second half.

The Bulldogs held a six-point advantage late in regulation, before Crichton's Stanlee Brownlee made his first two three pointers of the game to tied the game. Union had the ball with a chance to win in regulation but a turnover eliminated that opportunity. Crichton missed on their final shot of regulation.

In the first overtime, the two teams posted 14 points each to go to the second extra period knotted at 94-94. In the second overtime, the lead went back and forth, until Union grabbed the 106-105 lead inside 30 seconds to play. Crichton missed on two attempts at the win. Union came away with the 106-105 2OT victory.

Just last season, Union lost at Crichton in the TranSouth Tournament title game 89-85 in overtime. Earlier this year, Union topped the Comets 93-80.

Union was led by Neaville's 40 points, including 10-of-22 from behind the arc. Keith Tolliver also added a career-high 21 points. Ryan Merriman posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Brian Lake added 10 points. Union shot 47-percent from the field, 41-percent (15-37) from behind the arc, and 70-percent (19-27) from the free throw line.

Crichton's Emanuel Wimbush led six Comet players in double figures with 31 points. Stanley Brownlee posted 17 points and 11 rebounds. Michael Sapp also added a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Sylvania Watkins added 13 points, Zarko Brankovic scored 11 points, and Rico Seay posted 10 points. Crichton shot 51-percent from the field and 67-percent (18-27) from behind the arc, including 13-of-17 three pointers in the second half and both overtimes. The Comets added 65-percent (17-26) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be a home conference game versus Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.) on Monday, February 25. The men will play at 8:00 pm, preceded by the women at 6:00 pm.
