JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/25/2008 - The Union University men continue their hot streak with a third straight win, this time an upset of No. 17 Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.), 73-68. Union improved to 16-12 overall and 10-8 in the TranSouth. Trevecca Nazarene dropped to 20-8 on the season and 12-6 in the league.
Trevecca Nazarene opened the game with a 6-0 run and scored 13 of the game's first 18 points to take an early eight point lead. The Trevecca Nazarene Trojans continued to push the lead up to 11 points, 25-14, with 12:26 left in the first half. Union then posted an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to just three points. But the Trojans again took the lead back out to 10 points. Union managed to cut the halftime margin to five points, 37-32.
In the second half, Union continued the momentum from just before the half. Including a 4-0 run to close the half, Union added a 9-2 run to start the second half and took a two-point lead, 41-39, just two minutes into the half. From that point, the next 16 minutes was back and forth basketball that produced six ties and seven lead changes. Union led by as many as six points (56-50) while Trevecca Nazarene’s largest advantage during that stretch was three points (64-61). Union tied the game at 64-64 on a three pointer by Brian Lake with 2:55 left in the game. Union never trailed again. The Bulldog’s added a second three pointer in a minute’s time, this one coming from Matt Neaville to give Union a three point lead. Neaville’s second three-pointer on the night tied the Union record for three pointers in a season with 134. Union then sank four straight free throws in the final 23 seconds from Lake and Keith Tolliver to go up by seven points, 73-66, with 16 seconds left. A late basket by the Trojans set the final score at 73-68, Union.
Union was led by Keith Tolliver with 18 points. Tolliver is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds per game over the last three games. Brian Lake posted a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Neaville posted 13 points in the game. Union shot 39-percent from the field, just 20-percent (6-30) from behind the arc, and 79-percent (15-19) from the free throw line.
Trevecca Nazarene was led by Collins Onyando with 19 points. Josh Helton added 14 points while Rick James scored 12 points. The Trojans shot 44-percent from the field, 33-percent (6-18) from three-point range, and 50-percent (4-8).
Up next for Union will be their final home game of the regular season, Thursday February 28 versus Blue Mountain College (Miss.). Senior night for the Union teams will feature the men at 8:00 pm, preceded by the women’s game at 6:00 pm.
