JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/14/2008 - The defending TranSouth Conference champions and three-time NAIA Women’s Basketball National Champion Union University Lady Bulldogs have added another recruit to for the 2008-09 season. Christina Ray will transfer to Union this fall from the University of Texas-El Paso as a junior and will complete her major in Pre-Med.
Union head coach Mark Campbell states, “Christina is an athletic guard who can get to the basket and make shots from the perimeter. She has a very high basketball I.Q., and she makes us better on the defensive end of the floor as well.” Campbell goes on to add, “Christina is great student in the field of Pre-Med. She comes from Westbury Christian School which is very similar to the atmosphere at Union. She expects the best from herself in every area.”
Ray, a 5-foot-7 guard and native of Houston, Texas, played basketball for Keitha Adams at UTEP. She played in 24 games for UTEP in her two seasons and was a member of the 2008 team that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the national tournament. While at UTEP, Ray was named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Ray prepped at Westbury Christian School, participating in basketball and track. She was named MVP and was named All-State in basketball her junior and senior seasons. Ray was also named Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore. She averaged 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals as a senior in high school. She helped lead her team to three straight state tournament semifinal appearances and three straight 30-plus win seasons. In the state semifinal game as a senior, Ray scored 29 points and made 6-of-8 three pointers.
In track, Ray helped her team win the 4x100 relay championship. She also excelled in the classroom as she was on the Honor Roll all four years of high school. Ray is the daughter of Quinton and Dynelle Ray.
