Jackson, Tenn. - 9/10/2002 - The Union University Lady Bulldog volleyball team improved their season record to 5-0 with a 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-26) win over Lindsey Wilson College.
Union is off to a fast start in 2002. Fresh off their championship of the Union University Invitational Tournament, the Lady Bulldogs are now 5-0 on the season. In those five matches, Union has won 15 of the 16 games played. Union is currently ranked No. 4 in the Region XI polls and No. 2 in the conference polls.
Coach Brian Dunn had only three returning players from last season’s conference runner-up team, not to mention the loss of Lauren Hayden, the NAIA’s career kills record holder, to graduation. This team had some key spots to fill from the 2001 team that went 32-6 last year.
Even with seven new players on the roster, the players look to be blending together and playing good volleyball at the start. Unlike last season’s team which constantly fed Hayden the ball, this team has five different players that are sharing the offensive load. The lone senior, Andrea Darr leads the team with 39 kills, junior transfers Jenny Glassey, Crystal Abel, and Lindsay Stalberg follow with 37, 35, and 25 kills respectively. Returning sophomore, Allison Shein adds 20 kills to the rotation. Erin Bayne, another junior transfer, has taken over the setting duties and has tallied 135 assists. Darr and returning sophomore, Nicole Garber set the past with 28 and 23 service aces respectively.
It’s still early in the season and the Lady Bulldogs are up against a tough TranSouth Conference. Lee University, the defending conference champions are currently ranked No. 17 in the NAIA. Teams like Martin Methodist and Trevecca Nazarene are much improved from last season. However, Coach Dunn feels that his squad can go out each match and be competitive.
The Lady Bulldogs travel to Kentucky for matches against Campbellsville and Spalding this weekend. Their next home match will be Monday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. versus Bethel College.
