Former Gideon Standout making most of opportunity at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/10/2008 - As a freshman, Lindsey Wilson entered Union University on a volleyball scholarship. And with seven upperclassmen, including four seniors, she knew her opportunities might be few and far between. Now, over halfway through her first season at Union, Wilson is making the most of one of those opportunities.

In Union’s 17th match of the season, the team’s second leading hitter with 153 kills, Heather Lieberman, went down with an injury. Wilson, who had not been a regular starter for the Lady Bulldogs, answered the call from Head Coach Steven Gream.

Over the past four matches, Wilson, a native of Catron, Mo., has started every game, helping to keep alive a season-long winning streak of nine matches for Union. On the season, Wilson has tallied 48 kills, with 34 of those kills coming in the past four matches. She posted her career-high 11 kills in Union’s 3-2 win over Lyon (Ark.) College. She added nine kills in each wins over Cumberland (Tenn.) University and Lambuth (Tenn.) University. Wilson’s nine kills in the Lambuth match tied for a team high.

During this stretch of four matches for Wilson, she has tallied 34 kills (2.0 per game), two aces, 21 digs, and four blocks.

It is not certain how long Lieberman will be out with the injury. However, Coach Gream, a native of Portageville, Mo., is pleased with the play of Wilson. She is just a freshman, but is gaining valuable experience in big matches as they push for a conference title down the stretch run.

Union is currently 17-4 on the season and 8-2 in the TranSouth Conference, just two games back of the conference leader.
