JACKSON, Tenn. - 12/4/2008 - The No. 1 ranked Union University Lady Bulldogs opened the 2008-09 TranSouth Conference season with an 88-50 win over No. 23 Bethel (Tenn.) College. With the win, Union (12-0, 1-0) improved their regular season winning streak to 42 games.
Union, the two-time defending TranSouth Conference Champion, has won 10 of the 12 TranSouth regular season titles, and nine of the 12 tournament titles in the history of the league.
Union's defense was the story early, holding Bethel to 13 first half points. The Bethel Lady Wildcats (7-2, 0-1) where held scoreless for the first three minutes of the game. Union led 6-0 early, and then used several spurts to increase their lead. After leading 8-5 with a little over 15 minutes left in the half, Union posted a 12-0 run to push the lead to 20-5. Over the final 10 minutes of the first half, Union continued to stretch their lead, holding a 43-13 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Union added 45 more points, as they coasted to their first conference win of the season. The 50 points allowed for Union matched their lowest defensive total of the season. Union's defense has allowed 59 points or less in seven of their 12 games this year.
Union boasted five players in double figures led by Josephine Owino with 16 points and Kailtin Dudley with 15 points. Kayla Hudson posted 14 points, including four three pointers. Lavanda Ross and Christina Ray added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Union shot 49-percent from the field, 35-percent (7-20) from the three point line, and 94-percent (15-16) from the free throw line.
Bethel was led by Teena Carter with 13 points and Joanna Ortiz with 11 points. Bethel shot 32-percent from the field, including just 17-percent in the first half. They sank 29-percent of their three pointers (4-14) and 62-percent of their free throws (8-13).
Up next for Union will be another home conference game on Saturday, December 6 at 2:00 pm as the Lady Bulldogs host Lyon (Ark.) College.
