JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/6/2009 - The Union University Baseball team posted a sweep in their season opening double-header on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs defeated Clarke (Iowa) College 10-1 in the first game and then 7-1 in game two.
This was the first action of the season for both teams.
In the first game, Union scored eight runs over the first three inning to coast to the win. Carl Harken earned the win with 5.0 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just two hits.
Danny Grimm, a freshman from USJ, posted a 3-for-5 afternoon in his first collegiate game. Alex Turner, Corey Rudolph, and David Maristany each added two hits. Turner and Maristany led the way with three and two RBI respectively.
In the second game, Union scored their runs late, capped off with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Andrew Haley earned the win, tossing five innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit and six strikeouts.
Maristany led Union in the second game, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a two-run homer. Grant Luke was 3-for-3 in the contest.
Up next for Union will be a home game on Tuesday, Feb. 10 versus Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University at 2:00 pm.
