JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/18/2009 - The Union University softball team swept their home opening double-header over Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University 6-5 and 8-0. With the pair of wins, Union improved to 4-2 on the season, while Christian Brothers dropped to 2-2 overall.
After rain forced Union to play a quadruple-header on Saturday in the Belhaven (Miss.) tournament to begin their season, Union returned home for a normal softball afternoon at Fesmire Field.
Union did not take long to post their first runs as the Lady Bulldogs tallied two runs in the bottom of the first. After a quiet couple of innings, Christian Brothers tied the contest at 2-2 with a pair in the top of the fourth inning. Union answered with a three-run homer from Sydney McMillin in the bottom of the fifth. A run in the bottom of the sixth for Union proved to be necessary as Christian Brothers rallied with two in the sixth and one in the seventh. However, Christian Brothers never took the lead and it was Union who held on for the 6-5 win.
Hailee Edward (1-1) tossed five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikes outs. Bethany Burnett came in for two innings of work, allowing three runs, but earning her first save of the year. McMillin led Union with a 2-for-3 day and four RBI. Lindsey Landreneau was 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot, while Brittany Burkett also added two hits, including a homerun.
In the second game, Union slapped two more homeruns, one by Katie Davis and one by Ali Thomas. Union scored in each of their four innings of work, including three in the bottom of the fourth. McMillin tossed five innings, allowing just two hits and no runs. Davis was 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Landreneau, Michelle Albonetti, Thomas, each added two hits.
Up next for Union softball will be a home double-header on Tuesday, February 24 versus Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College starting at 3:00 pm.
