JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/28/2009 - The Union University Bulldogs, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, captured the 2009 TranSouth Regular Season Title with an 89-75 win over Mid-Continent (Ky.) University on Saturday. The title is the sixth in the 13-year history of the league. With the win, the Bulldogs completed the regular season 25-5 overall and 14-2 in conference play. Mid-Continent falls to 15-14 on the year and 10-6 in the TranSouth.
The first half began with a basket by Mid-Continent, but that would prove to be the Cougars only lead of the game as the Bulldogs quickly answered with a three pointer of their own. Union quickly built a 13-point lead, 20-7, with just under 13 minutes to go in the half. Mid-Continent chipped away at Union's lead, however, pulling back within six points, 24-18 with less than eight minutes until the break. The Bulldogs pushed their lead to the biggest of the half, 16 points, 38-22. The Cougars did not back down though, as they closed the half on an 11-2 run, to cut Union's halftime lead to just seven points, 40-33.
To start the second half, Union scored first, but could not stretch their lead as the two teams swapped baskets over the next 11 minutes, before Mid-Continent pulled within four points on two occasions near the nine-minute mark. Union then took control of the game for good, stretching their lead to as many as 20 points, 87-67, with one minute left in the contest, before settling for a 89-75 win to clinch the TranSouth Conference regular season championship.
Union was led by Greg Truvillion with a game-high 28 points. Keith Tolliver and Matt Neaville each added 18 points, while Brian Lake added 13 points. Truvillion and Lake each added game-highs with nine rebounds. Union shot 48-percent from the field, 23-percent (6-26), and 82-percent (27-33) from the free throw line.
Union was out-rebounded 37-36, but committed only 12 turnovers compared to 18 from Mid-Continent.
Mid-Continent was led by Marvin Bolden with 18 points and Keiran Nunley with 14 points. The Cougars shot 47-percent from the field, 35-percent (6-17) from the three point line, and 54-percent (7-13) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a quarterfinal game in the TranSouth Conference Tournament on Thursday, March 5 at 7:00 pm. Union will play the winner of Blue Mountain (Miss.) and Lyon (Ark.).
