KANSAS CITY, Mo. - 3/19/2009 - A 25-8 first half run propelled third-seeded Union University (Tenn.) to an 82-63 victory over University of Science and Arts (Okla.) in game 11 of the 2009 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament at Municipal Auditorium Thursday afternoon.
USAO started like it was going to be its day, jumping out to 7-0 and 11-3 leads, before the Bulldogs righted the ship with a 25-8 run that gave them a 28-19 lead with 6:20 remaining in the half. Union shot 13-of-28 (46-percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes, including eight 3-pointers, to take a 43-28 halftime advantage.
The Bulldogs dashed any hopes for a comeback by the Drovers with a quick 9-0 run to start the second half, building their lead to 24 points at 52-28 with 15:58 left. Union shot 50 percent and committed only two turnovers in the second half and 10 overall. USAO, which shot 37-percent in the first half, was 41-percent from the field in the second half and 39-percent for the game, making 26 of its 67 attempts.
Union was paced by Brian Lake with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Greg Truvillion added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Matt Neaville netted 17 points and six caroms. The Bulldogs’ Martez Hawkins dished out 10 assists.
Adam Shoffit was the main weapon for USAO, scoring 19 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Three other players scored eight points each for the Drovers.
Union improves to 29-5 overall and will play the winner of the Columbia College (Mo.) and Lee University (Tenn.) contest at 6:15 pm CDT on Friday. USAO ends its season at 15-18.
