JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/5/2009 - The Union University baseball team rallied for the second straight night to remain the only undefeated team in the 2009 TranSouth Conference Tournament. Union scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to top Lyon (Ark.) College 7-5. Union, seeded fifth in the tournament, improved to 34-17 on the season. The 34 wins for Union is a new high for Head Coach Brent Fronabarger, now in his fourth season with Union.
Union fell behind early when Lyon scored three runs in the first inning, two of which were unearned. Union rallied for single runs in each the second and third innings to cut the deficit to just one run at 3-2. However, the Scots of Lyon scored a run in each the top of the fourth and seventh innings to push their lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Union opened the inning with three straight hits from Alex Turner, Corey Rudolph, and Josh Jones. Jones' double drove in Turner and Rudolph, but Jones was then thrown out at third base trying to stretch his double into a triple. Union managed a two more base runners, but failed to score any more that inning.
Union trailed 5-4 going into the bottom of the eighth inning when the Lyon pitchers had trouble throwing strikes. Union tied the game when Rudolph was walked with the bases loaded. After a pitching change, two more bases loaded walks led to two more runs for Union. The Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom of the eighth with the use of only one hit.
A perfect ninth inning from Kevin Kirksey (2-0) helped earn the win. Kirksey tossed 3.0 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out four batters. Brad Davis tossed six innings for Union in the start, allowing five runs and seven hits. Jones led Union with a 3-for-4 game. Jones and Grant Luke each added two RBI in the contest, while Cole McAdams and David Maristany each added two hits.
