JACKSON, Tenn. - 6/4/2009 - The Union University women’s basketball players took part in a food drive to benefit the Children’s Hunger Fund. In just over a month of work, the Lady Bulldog players gathered boxes of food and donations that totaled just over $12,000.
Mark Campbell, the Union head coach said, “In a day and time when athletics is so over-glorified, it is great to be able to use athletics to benefit others. It is also a great thing to watch the team work so hard and enjoy a project like this.”
Union’s Christina Ray, who will be a senior on the 2009-10 team, led the group of players in this project. “Christina was on task for the entire month and did an unbelievable job with this project. I am very proud of her”, said Campbell.
This player-led group gathered 120 boxes of food, and over $9,000 in donations. All of the food and money gathered will be sent to Children’s Hunger Fund, with this particular project benefiting children in Mexico and Southern California.
The Children’s Hunger Fund is North America’s No. 1 cost efficient charity rated by Forbes magazine.
After a successful first year, the players look forward to doing this project again with the hopes of getting more people involved next year.
