Union men’s soccer drops match to Lyon on late goal

JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/22/2009 - The Union University men’s soccer team lost their sixth straight match in a 2-1 defeat to Lyon (Ark.) College. Union dropped to 1-6 on the season and 0-1 in TranSouth. Lyon improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Union and Lyon played a scoreless first half with Union out shooting Lyon 8-3 in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, Union scored first when Paul Turner drained a penalty kick in the 60th minute after Lyon committed a foul in the box. Just five minutes later, Lyon tied the match on a goal from Gabriel LaBlanc. The score was 1-1 going into the final 10 minutes of play when Lyon’s Greg Buford bent a shot over the outreached arms of Mike Phelan to give his team a 2-1 lead in the 83rd minute. That proved to be the game winning goal.

Union out shot Lyon 20-8 in the match, but had no luck in finding the back of the net. Lyon goalie, Matt Callaway recorded seven saves, while Union goalie Phelan tallied two saves.

Up next for Union will be a home non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7:00 pm versus William Carey (Miss.) University.
