JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/29/2009 - The Union University women’s soccer team lost to Union (Ky.) College 3-2 on Tuesday night. The Lady Bulldogs of Union (Tenn.) dropped to 5-4-1 on the season, while the Lady Bulldogs of Union (Ky.) improved to 7-0. Union (Ky.) is receiving votes in the latest NAIA national rankings.
Union (Tenn.) scored first with a quick goal from Candice Blackard in the second minute of play. However, Union (Ky.) was determined to keep their perfect season in tack. Ashley Hall of Union (Ky.) answered with two goals in the ninth and 28th minutes of play to give her team the 2-1 lead.
Jamie Haynes of Union (Tenn.) then found the back of the net in the 33rd minute of play to tie the match. But for the second and final time of the night, the lead went back in favor Union (Ky.) after Marcela Salum scored in the 40th minute to put her team up 3-2.
After a first half that produced five total goals, two ties and three lead changes, the second half proved to be a defensive battle. Both teams mounted 19 shots in the match, with both getting just eight shots in the second half. Union (Tenn.) had several late opportunities on goal that could have tied the contest, but could not score. Union (Tenn.) goalie Laura Pla recorded 10 saves in the match, while her counterpart from Union (Ky.), Patricia Nardy, tallied eight saves.
Up next for the Union Lady Bulldogs of Jackson will be a home match on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:00 p.m. versus the No. 5 ranked NAIA team, William Carey (Miss.) University.
