Union men’s soccer falls to No. 18 William Carey

JACKSON, Tenn. - 9/29/2009 - The Union University men’s soccer team lost to No. 18 William Carey (Miss.) University 7-1 on Tuesday night. Union dropped to 1-7 on the season, while William Carey improved to 6-2-2 overall. For Union, this marked their seventh straight loss.

William Carey got the scoring started early with a goal from Medy Lorius just 1:54 into the contest. Two goals from Reece Wilson and one from Carl Reynolds, all within the first 28 minutes of play, put the score at 4-0 in favor of the Crusaders. Union broke through with their lone goal when Rafael Carvalho found the back of the net in the 30th minute of play. Union trailed 4-1 at the half.

In the second half, William Carey scored twice inside the first 10 minute of play, pushing their lead to 6-1 on goals from Reynolds and Brendan Connolly. A final goal in the 70th minute from Jonny Fairbairn set the final score at 7-1. Medy recorded three assists along with his one goal, while Tito Salas also recorded one assist for William Carey.

Union was outshot by William Carey 36-6 in the match. J. Landham recorded 10 saves for Union, while Sean Mapson tallied one save for the Crusaders.

Up next for Union will be a conference match on Saturday, October 3 at Mid-Continent (Ky.) University at 2:00 p.m.
