Union men first place, women second in Union Cross Country Invitational

JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/3/2009 - The Union University cross country teams played host in the Union University Cross Country Invitational on Saturday on campus. Union’s men placed first out of five teams while, the Union women earned second place out of six teams. Union’s Hannah Clardy also took first place in the women’s individual.

Union’s men placed first with a total time of 2:14.10. The University of Tennessee-Martin finished second (2:15.27), Blue Mountain (Miss.) College was third (2:18.89), Bethel (Tenn.) University finished fourth (2:20.68), while Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) was fifth with only three finishers.

Justin Cacarco of UT Martin took first place honors in the men’s individual with a time of 25.34. Union’s Alex Bett finished second with a time of 26.07, while teammate Zach Covington was third with a time of 26:19. Other Union finishers include Seth Covington in seventh place (26.50), Drake Ott in tenth place (27.12), Joel Wellum in 16th place (28.22), Logan Smith in 18th place (28.48) and Dan Ramer in 25th place (29.57).

In the women’s race, UT Martin took first place with a total time of 1:41.25. Union’s women finished second (1:45.22), Blue Mountain finished third (1:48.74), Delta State (Miss.) University finished fourth (1:51.32), while Freed-Hardeman and Bethel finished with only four and three runners respectively.

Clardy of Union won first place in the women’s individual with a time of 19:28. UT Martin trio Shannon Wall, Emily Jones, and Emily Luze placed second, third and fourth. Other Union finishers include Carissa Wilson in ninth place (21.05), Carrie Moore in tenth place (21.20), Lilli Harmon in 12th place (21.36), Cally Howell in 17th place (22.33) and Hannah Staggs in 27th place (23.51). Union ran without two of their runners, Kayla Hauss and Danielle Partain who finished second and third on Union’s team in the Vanderbilt Classic two weeks ago.

The invitational at Union also included high school teams from west Tennessee and neighboring states. Lipscomb (Tenn.) High School won the boys meet, while Saltillo (Miss.) High School won the girls meet.

Up next for the Union cross country teams will be the Southeastern Classic in Louisville, Ky. on October 24.
