MAYFIELD, Ky. - 10/3/2009 - The Union University men’s soccer team snapped a seven-match losing streak on Saturday with a 2-1 overtime win over Mid-Continent (Ky.) University. With the win, Union improved to 2-7 on the season and 1-1 in the TranSouth. Mid-Continent dropped to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
This marked the first win for Union at Mid-Continent. The win also evened the all-time series with Mid-Continent, 4-4-1.
Dejan Kostic’s goal in the third minute of overtime gave Union the much needed win. Guilherme Reis recorded the assist on the winning goal for the Bulldogs.
Mid-Continent scored first with a goal from Marcio das Neves in the 41st minute of the first half, assisted by Giles Nzienqui. With that goal, the Cougars led Union 1-0 at halftime. In the second half, Union got on the board with a goal from Martin Godwin in the 62nd minute of play to tie the match. The score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation.
J. Landham recorded three saves for Union in goal, while Alexis Mina had a save for Mid-Continent in his 93 minutes in goal. Mid-Continent out shot Union 8-7 in the game, including 4-3 on goal. Paul Turner led Union with two shots, while Greighton Brooks led Mid-Continent with four shots.
Up next for Union will be a non-conference, home match on Tuesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. versus Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University.
