Union women’s soccer wins 6-1 at Cumberland

Reardon had 1 goal and 2 assists

LEBANON, Tenn. - 10/8/2009 - In a match being played a day earlier than scheduled due to the threat of rain, the Union University Lady Bulldogs cruised to an 6-1 win at Cumberland (Tenn.) University. Union improved to 6-4-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in the TranSouth. Cumberland dropped to 2-6-1 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Union started the afternoon with a goal from Candice Blackard in the thirteenth minute of play. Cumberland answered back with a goal from Morgan Shaffer in the twenty-fifth minute, assisted by Rachel Scoggins and Kristen McClanahan.

The Lady Bulldogs of Union took control from that point on, with five unanswered goals to earn the win. Eboni Murphy scored in the thirty-third minute, assisted by Christina Reardon. Union held a 2-1 lead at the half.

In the second half, Murphy posted her second goal of the match with a one-on-one score in the sixty-seventh minute. A goal from Steffi King in the seventy-first minute and a header from Jill Landers in the seventy-seventh minute pushed the score to 5-1. Reardon, who recorded her second assist of the match on the Landers’ goal, made good on a penalty kick goal in the eighty-eighth minute to set the final at 6-1.

Union out shot Cumberland 39-9 in the match. Laura Pla recorded three saves for Union. Cumberland’s Cierra Boots recorded 13 saves.

Up next for Union will be the make-up game with Bethel (Tenn.) University on Tuesday, October 13 at 5:00 p.m. at Union.
