LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. - 10/20/2009 - The Union University men’s golf team posted a second place finish in the Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College Invitational. After leading the event following the first round on Monday, Union fell to second place by just two strokes with Tuesday’s final round. Cumberland (Tenn.) University earned the win.
Union’s Clay Mallard, a former Milan High School standout and senior for this year’s golf team, was the medalist for the event. Mallard posted two rounds of 68 to claim first place.
In addition to Mallard’s 68-68, Brett Barry shot 68-75, Ryan Chandler shot 73-72, Ben Waits shot 72-75 and Mill Hamaguchi shot 74-74 to round out Union’s team.
Cumberland shot a two-day total of 568 to win first place. Union was second with a score of 570, while Martin Methodist shot a 589.
Union golf completes their fall schedule and will now look to the spring season with the goal of winning a conference title and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament. Union last won the TranSouth Tournament in the spring of 2008. Union has won 10 conference golf titles, include TranSouth and Tennessee Collegiate Athletic Conferences.
One important event remains this fall for the Union golf team as they are co-hosting a fundraising golf scramble with the Union baseball team on Oct. 31.
