Jackson, Tenn. - 12/19/2002 - The Union University Bulldogs signed Ben Frederick out of Memphis for the 2003-04 basketball season. Frederick is graduating high school a semester early and is planning to enroll at Union this coming January.
Frederick led Bartlett High School to a state championship as a sophomore. During the championship season, he was named to the all-tournament teams at the state, region, and district levels. The Commercial Appeal out of Memphis honored Frederick with their ‘Sixth Man’ award. He set a school record with a .667 field goal percentage as a sophomore. As a junior, Frederick was named the district Player of the Year and also was selected to the all-tournament teams on the region and district levels. Frederick also was named to the Memphis All-Metro team. He averaged 18 points per game and going into his senior season, Frederick was named as one of the top 10 players in the state by numerous publications.
At 6-foot10 and 240 lbs, Union’s head coach Ralph Turner believes he can be a great player for the Bulldogs in years to come. Turner adds, “We are thrilled that Ben has chosen to play for us here at Union. The extra semester is going to help him be ready to contribute immediately as a freshman. Not only is he an outstanding student, but he has all the tools to be a great post player for our program.”
Frederick will begin playing for Union in the fall of 2003. His major is electrical engineering.
