JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/14/2010 - No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University Lady Bulldogs pushed their home court winning streak to 52 games with a 93-62 win over Lyon (Ark.) College. Union improved to 16-1 on the season with their ninth straight win, while going to 3-0 in the TranSouth. Lyon, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA ranking, dropped to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Union opened the game with a quick 9-2 run over the first three minutes, including four straight points by Christina Ray. Lyon remained close and with 12:26 left in the half, cut the lead down to five points, 18-13. However, Union began to slowly stretch their lead well into double figures. Union led by as many as 19 points in the first half, 43-24 and 45-26, before taking a 45-28 lead into the locker room.
The second half started exactly the same as the first with a quick 9-2 run, pushing Union’s lead to 24 points with 17:06 left in the game. Lyon got as close as 18 points in the second half, but Union pushed the lead back into to as many as 32, 92-60. Three free throws late for Lyon set the final score at 92-63.
Union was led by Ray with 16 points, just one point shy of her career high. Sara Chan scored 15 points, Kaitlin Dudley added 14 points, Lavanda Ross scored 11 points and Kayla Hudson added 10 points. Hudson and Dudley each tallied two 3-pointers. Kayla Bryant continued her recent streak of good shooting with 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc for nine points. Bryant has made 5-of-9 3-pointers in her last two games. Union shot 53 percent from the field, 47 percent (9-19) from 3-point range and 68 percent (15-22) from the free throw line.
Union committed just eight turnovers, while forcing 24 from Lyon. Lyon becomes the second straight opponent and fourth on the season to out rebound the Lady Bulldogs (31-29).
Lyon was led by Keshianna Hodges with 17 points and Suzanne Fincham with 15 points. The Pipers shot 48 percent from the field, 12 percent (2-17) from behind the arc and 88 percent (15-17) from the free throw line.
