JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/13/2010 - The No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team extended their home court winning streak to 56 games with a 68-59 win over No. 15 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University. With the win, Union also extended their overall winning streak to 18 games and their TranSouth regular season game winning streak to 47 games.
Union improved to 25-1 on the season and 12-0 in the TranSouth. Freed-Hardeman dropped to 19-5 overall and 7-4 in league play. Union has a two game lead in the TranSouth over Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) who holds a 10-2 league mark.
Freed-Hardeman opened with the game’s first basket on a layup by Jana Cross. Union’s Jessica Graves answered with a three pointer to put Union up 3-2. That was the way the first 12 minutes of play went, including two ties and seven lead changes. With the game tied at 18-18 at the 7:46 mark, Union drained back-to-back three pointers from Kayla Hudson and Lavanda Ross to put Union up 24-18. Union extended their first half lead to as many as eight points, 29-21 and 31-23 before taking a 31-27 lead into the locker room.
Union opened the second half with two straight baskets to go up by eight points again, 35-27. However, over the next three minutes play, Freed-Hardeman posted a 11-4 run to cut Union’s lead down to just one point, 39-38, at the 15:31 mark. Union maintained the lead with an 11-2 run over the next five minutes to lead 50-40 with 10:49 to play. Freed-Hardeman got as close as three points, 52-49, however Union held off the Lady Lions, pushing their lead back to 11 points, 66-55, with 2:28 left in the game. Union held their largest lead of the game at 11 points twice, before taking the 68-59 final.
Union was led by Ross with 19 points, including 11 in the first half. Sara Chan added 15 points, Kaitlin Dudley scored 12 and Hudson posted 10 points. Ashley Lillard recorded 14 rebounds in the game, including 10 in the first half. Union shot 53 percent from the field and 54 percent (7-13) from behind the arc. Chan was the only Lady Bulldog to shoot free throws, going 1-of-4 for 25 percent.
Freed-Hardeman was led by Hanna Parsley with 19 points, including five three pointers. Natalie Shumper added 13 points and Jana Cross scored 12 points. Meribeth Boehler grabbed 10 rebounds. The Lady Lions shot 33 percent from the field, 28 percent (7-25) from behind the arc and 77 percent (10-13) from the free-throw line.
Up next for Union will be another home conference game on Monday, February 15 at 6:00 p.m. versus Cumberland (Tenn.). This will be Union’s cancer awareness night with fundraising efforts going to the American Cancer Society.
