Home court winning streak for No. 1 Union now at 58

JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/20/2010 - The No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team posted a 113-57 win over Blue Mountain (Miss.) College on Saturday. Union improved to 28-1 on the season and 15-0 in the TranSouth, while Blue Mountain dropped to 9-19 overall and 2-12 in league play.

Union’s home winning streak is now at 58 games, while their overall winning streak goes to 21 and their TranSouth regular season winning streak goes to 50.

Also in the game, Union senior guard Kaitlin Dudley moved into a tie for third on Union’s all-time scoring list with former teammate Josephine Owino. The two sit tied at 2,240 career points. Dudley is just 99 points shy of reaching second place and 132 points away from being the top scorer all-time.

Union scored the first basket of the game with a layup from Dudley. Blue Mountain answered with a three pointer from Anna Lisa Powell to take a brief 3-2 lead. The two teams struggled early to score points as Union maintained a 14-9 lead after seven minutes of play. However, Union posted 19-0 run over the next six minutes to lead 33-9. Union led by as many as 34 points in the first half, before taking a 54-23 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Blue Mountain got as close as 29 points before Union extended it back to as many as 58 points. Union’s 113-57 final marked the highest point total of the season for Union.

Union has scored 224 points over their last two games.

Union was led by Jessica Graves with 23 points, including 5-of-5 three pointers. Kayla Hudson scored 20 points, Dudley added 18 points, Laura Crittendon scored 15 points on five three pointers and Lavanda Ross scored 11 points. Union shot 49 percent from the field, 49 percent (16-33) from long range and 88 percent (15-17) from the free-throw line.

Blue Mountain was led by Jessi Hayles with 18 points and Powell with 11 points. The Toppers shot 33 percent from the field, 21 percent (6-28) from behind the arc and 63 percent (5-8) from the free-throw line.

Up next for Union will be their final regular season game of the year in a road test at Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 6:00 p.m.
