JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/6/2010 - The No. 20 Union (Tenn.) University softball team recorded a double-header split on Tuesday with LSU-Alexandria. Union lost the first game 2-1 in eight innings, before taking the second game 4-0 behind the no-hitter from Bolivar native, Keaton Kirk. Union is now 24-10 on the season, while LSUA is 9-24.
In the second game of the day, Union scored one run in each of the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead. That was plenty of run support for the former Bolivar High School standout. Kirk (11-2) tossed her first no-hitter in her freshman season with Union. She recorded eight strikeouts to just one walk as she faced just two batters over the minimum. Amber Hayes hit the game’s only home run. Hayes and Sam Giesler led with two hits each, while Hayes led with two RBI.
Game one produced two more great pitching performances. Union’s Brooke Thomas (13-6) struck out 13 batters and allowed just three hits and two runs. However the Union offense could not help her as the Lady Bulldogs managed just one run in the fourth inning. LSUA scored in the sixth and then added the game winning tally in the top of the eighth. Megan Rowe (2-10) earned the win, allowing just one run and five hits in her eight innings of work.
Up next for Union will be a conference double-header at Cumberland (Tenn.) on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Lebanon, Tenn.
