NASHVILLE, Tenn. - 4/28/2010 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball team boasted five players on the 2010 TranSouth All-Conference teams released on Tuesday. Union also had eight players named on the TranSouth Scholar Athlete list.
Amber Hayes, Brooke Thomas and Ali Thomas each earned first team honors. Lindsey Landreneau and Keaton Kirk were named to the second team. Landreneau, Ali Thomas, Candice Thompson, Hayes, Brittany Burkett, Hailee Edwards, Ali Bozza and Emily Anthony were named scholar athletes. (roster, player bios, photos)
Hayes, 5-foot-9 junior first baseman from Brighton, Tenn., led Union with a .361 average. Her 36 runs and nine home runs were also team highs. Hayes added 53 hits, 11 doubles and 31 RBI. She posted a .975 fielding percentage at first base, with just eight errors in 326 chances.
Brooke Thomas, a 5-foot-5 freshman pitcher/outfielder from Huntingdon, Tenn., was successful as both a pitcher and a hitter for the Lady Bulldogs. In the circle, Thomas was the ace of the staff, posting a 19-8 record with a 1.56 ERA and two saves. She pitched in 31 games, had 23 starts, 22 complete games, three shutouts and struck out 180 batters in 179 innings pitched. As a hitter, Thomas posted a .309 average with eight doubles, three home runs, 15 RBI and five stolen bases.
Ali Thomas, a 5-foot-3 senior catcher from Pegram, Tenn., was third on the team with a .345 average. She tallied 24 runs, 49 hits, 10 doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI. As a catcher, Thomas threw out 43 percent of would-be-base-stealers (8-of-19). She posted a .996 fielding percentage with just one error in 280 chances on the season.
Landreneau, a 5-foot-4 senior shortstop from Leesburg, Ga., was second on the team with a .349 average. Her 58 hits, 13 doubles, two triples and 10 stolen bases were all team highs. Landreneau added 33 runs, three home runs and 24 RBI.
Kirk, a 5-foot-5 freshman pitcher/outfielder from Bolivar, Tenn., helped Union as a pitcher and as a fielder. However, her main contribution was in the circle. She posted a 13-4 record with one save and a 2.11 ERA. Kirk pitched in 24 games, with 21 starts, 12 complete games and five shut outs. She also recorded one no-hitter on the season. Kirk tallied 115 strikeouts in 126 innings.
Union plays their first game in the conference tournament on Wednesday at noon against Lyon. Union finished the regular season in second place, earning the No. 2 seed in the tournament with a 10-4 league record. Union is 32-14 overall and is receiving votes in the latest NAIA rankings.
