JACKSON, Tenn. - 7/2/2010 - The Union (Tenn.) University men’s basketball team signed Shane Burrell for the 2010-11 season. Burrell transfers to Union from Trinidad State Community College in Colorado. He will enter Union this fall as a junior.
“The coaching staff made me feel right at home”, says Burrell. “I can tell that they care about me more than just as a basketball player. I loved how Union has created an environment where student athletes can be a success on and off the court.”
Union head coach David Niven says, “Shane possesses all the tools that we love in the forwards we have on our team. Not only is he an excellent scorer in the post, but he also has the ability to step outside and shoot and handle the ball. Shane is a very unselfish player that does a really good job of finding the open man in any situation. Coach Rich Holden at Trinidad State has prepared him well for what he will face next season. We are thrilled to have a player like Shane on our team.”
Burrell, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., stands at 6-foot-8 and 275 lbs. Last season at Trinidad State, the forward averaged 14 points and a team high six rebounds per game. Burrell posted season highs with 30 points and 11 rebounds. As a freshman, Burrell played at Alabama A&M where he led the team with a 64-percent field goal percentage.
Burrell played his high school basketball for Dorsey (Calif.) High School where he averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds. He was regarded as one of the top players in Los Angeles as a senior. Burrell played on an under 19 basketball team that traveled overseas.
