Union Sweeps Eureka in Double Header, Gibbs Throws No-Hitter

Jackson, Tenn. - 3/3/2003 - Union University, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA preseason poll, improved to 10-2 on the season with their sweep of Eureka College. The Bulldogs won the first game 11-0 in five innings and the second game 10-0, also in five innings. Eureka falls to 0-2 on the season.

In game one of the double-header, Union’s sophomore pitcher, Matt Gibbs tossed a no-hitter. Gibbs recorded five strikeouts and four walks over his five innings of work. The game was called after five innings due to the NAIA mercy rule (10 run lead after five innings). Joel Hysmith, of Jackson Christian School went 3-for-3 on the day with three runs and two RBI. Roger Cook, of the University School of Jackson tallied two hits in three at bats with three RBI and two doubles. Jed Thomas and Steve Sweat each added two hits in the game. Union scored 11 runs on 13 hits and one Eureka error.

Game two featured much more of the same for the Bulldogs. Again, the game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. Union scored three runs in the first inning and seven in the third for the 10-0 win. Matt Glass started for the Bulldogs and pitched four innings of three-hit ball. Glass struck out eight batters and walked three. Steven Sweat, of Lexington, came in and pitched the final innings striking out two batters. Chris Wright went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI and one run. Union tallied 10 runs on seven hits and one Eureka error. The Bulldogs also stole five bases.

Union has added a game to their schedule as they will host Lambuth University on Tuesday, March 4 at 4:00 p.m. at Union University. This game does not effect the Union/Lambuth games schedule later in the season.
