No. 10 Union men drop third straight in loss to No. 17 Campbellsville

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/22/2010 - The No. 10 Union (Tenn.) University men’s basketball team fell at home 71-66 to No. 17 Campbellsville (Ky.) University. This marks the third straight loss for Union (3-3) after opening the season with three straight wins. Campbellsville improved to 5-1 on the season.

The first 10 minutes of the game was back and forth, including one tie and 10 lead changes. With 9:42 left in the half, Union’s Antoine Joseph sank a three pointer to give Union an 18-17 lead. However, on the next possession, Campbellsville took the lead on a basket from Brett Crittenden and never trailed again.

Campbellsville extended their first half lead to as many as eight points on two occasions, with the latest coming 33-25. Union cut their halftime deficit down to six points, 35-29.

In the second half, Campbellsville quickly padded their lead on a three pointer from Monie Hudson to go up by nine points. Campbellsville continued to extend their lead and with 11:18 left in the game, held their largest lead of 17 points (55-38).

However, Union responded with a 24-11 run over the next 10 minutes to cut the deficit to just four points at 66-62 with 1:25 left to play. However, five-of-six free throws over the next minute kept Union from getting any closer. Campbellsville pushed the lead back to 70-62 before taking the road win, 71-66.

Union was led by CJ Davis with 19 points. Antoine Joseph recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Skyler Vaden added 12 points. Union struggled again from long range, shooting just 26 percent (5-19) as a team. Union shot 42 percent from the field and 65 percent (13-20) from the free throw line.

Campbellsville was led by JaVaugn Espritt with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Monie Hudson added 16 points, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Brandon Williams scored 15 points. The Tigers shot 47 percent from behind the field, 37 percent (7-19) from behind the arc and 53 percent (8-15) from the free throw line.

Up next for the Bulldogs will be home games in the Union Thanksgiving Classic. Union faces No. 8 McKendree (Ill.) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Tougaloo (Miss.), who is receiving votes, on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
