No. 1 Union rallies to win 73-66 at No. 7 Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - 11/29/2010 - The No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team rallied to win at No. 7 Lee (Tenn.) University 73-66. This is the fourth NAIA top-10 team Union has played on the season. Union improved to 8-0 on the year, while Lee dropped to 7-1 overall.

Lee scored the game’s first six points on three pointers from Brooke McKinnon and Kally Eldridge. Lee extended their lead to 13-2 and led 16-6 with 13:55 left. Union slowly began to cut into the Lady Flame lead and with 8:39 left in the half, a basket from Sarah Chan pulled Union to within two points, 24-22. Lee, however, quickly pushed their advantage back to eight points at 31-22 with 5:47 left. Chan again started a rally with four straight of her 19 first half points as Union rallied to trail just 35-30 at the half.

In the second half, Union kept the Lady Flames close. Then with 12:08 left in the game, Union’s Kayla Hudson sank two free throws to give Union their first lead of the game at 44-43.

Over the next five minutes, the teams went back-and-forth with seven lead changes and one tie with both teams leading by as many as three points. With 6:38 left in the game, Chan scored to put Union up for good, 57-56. Union stretched the lead to 63-57, before Lee came back to within two points, 65-63 with 3:08 to play. Union’s Kayla Bryant then sank her only three of the night to put Union back up by five points. Union led by as many as nine points down the stretch, 72-63, before taking the 73-66 win.

Union was led by Chan with a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Hudson, who scored just three points in the first half, finished with 16 points. Lavanda Ross scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, while Mildred Olumasi added 11 points. Only seven players for Union saw action, with six of them scoring points. Union shot 53 percent from the field, 50 percent (4-8) from behind the arc and 52 percent (11-21) from the free throw line.

Lee was led by McKinnon with 13 points. Hollie German added 11 points, while Eldridge and Rachel Lockhart added 10 each. Lee shot 37 percent from the field, 38 percent (9-24) from behind the arc and 65 percent (13-20) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be two more tough road contest as they travel to Chicago, Ill. for games against No. 6 St. Xavier (Ill.) and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), who is receiving votes. The games will be played in the Olivet Nazarene Classic.
