Jackson, Tenn. - 4/7/2003 - Union University senior Chip Briggs has been selected as the TranSouth Player of the Week. On the week, Union’s baseball team went 4-2 and improved their season record to 24-13 overall and 8-7 in TranSouth Conference play. The Bulldogs posted wins over NCAA Div. II opponent Christian Brothers, cross-town rival Lambuth, and two wins over conference foe Lyon College.
Chip Briggs, a senior from Clarksville, Tenn., hit .542 (13-24) to lead Union. He tallied six runs, four doubles, one triple, and six RBI. Briggs also walked three times, slugged .792, and had an on base percentage of .593. Briggs recorded multi-hit games in five of six games for the week including a 4-of-5 day versus NCAA Div. II opponent Christian Brothers. He also had at least one RBI in five of Union's six games this week.
Briggs, a former Jackson State standout, missed the first 22 games of this season with a broken ankle, but in the 15 games since his return to Union's lineup, he is hitting .411 (23-56). Union is now 24-13 overall and 8-7 in the TranSouth. Union is currently in a three-way tie with Berry and Martin Methodist for the third place spot in the TranSouth.
