JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/20/2011 - The No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team posted a 78-45 win over Cumberland (Tenn.) University. Union improved to 19-0 on the season and 6-0 in league play. Cumberland dropped to 8-10 on the season and 1-5 in league play.
The win for Union was their 24th straight win overall, 57th straight TranSouth regular season win and 12th straight home win. Union improved their regular season winning streak to 41, just two shy of tying the school record of 43.
In front of a slim crowd due to the snow fall in the area, Union jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Cumberland rallied to cut the Union lead down to 10-7. Cumberland trailed by three points again at 12-9, before Union scored 16 straight to extend their lead to 28-9. Union led by as many as 22 points, 33-11, before settling for a 40-26 halftime lead. Cumberland had cut the deficit down to 11 points, when Union’s Lavanda Ross drained a three pointer at the halftime buzzer.
In the second half, Union extending their lead and led by 31 points on two different occasions, before taking the 33-point final, 78-45.
Union was led by Kayla Hudson and Sarah Chan with 19 points each. Hudson, the reigning NAIA and TranSouth Player of the Week, made 5-of-7 three pointers. Chan was a rebound shy of a double-double as she finished with a game-high nine boards. Ross added 15 points, while Hope Adams scored 13 points. Union shot 53 percent from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from behind the arc and just 48 percent (10-21) from the free throw line.
Cumberland was led by Yalonda Davis with 16 points. Casie Cowan added 11 points. Cumberland shot 32 percent from the field, 20 percent (3-15) from three point range and 83 percent (10-12) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a home conference game on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2:00 p.m. versus Blue Mountain (Miss.).
