PULASKI, Tenn. - 2/5/2011 - The No. 1 ranked Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team posted a 66-49 win at Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College. Union improved to 23-0 on the season and 10-0 in the TranSouth. Martin Methodist, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA rankings, dropped to 15-8 overall and 4-5 in league play.
This win was the 28th straight for the Lady Bulldogs and 61st straight TranSouth regular season win.
Union used a second straight fast start to set the pace early. Union jumped out to an 17-3 lead, including a 15-0 run to start the game. Union led by as many as 15 points in the first half. Martin Methodist, who ranks No. 2 in the NAIA in points per game (87), rallied to cut the Union lead down to three points, 17-14. Union answered the 11-0 run by Martin Methodist with a 12-3 run to push the lead to 12. Union settled for a 31-25 halftime lead.
For the second straight game, Sarah Chan was limited in the first half as she picked up two offensive fouls early in the game. She managed just four first half points.
In the second half, Union pulled away as Chan was scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second half. Union led by 20 points in the second half, before settling for the 66-49 final.
On a night when Union’s offense struggled, the defense held the nation’s second ranked scoring offense to just 49 points on an 87 points per game average.
Union was led by Chan with 17 points. Kayla Hudson added 14 points, Hope Adams scored 11 points and Lavanda Ross scored 10 points. Union shot 48 percent from the field, 20 percent (4-20) from behind the arc and 50 percent (8-16) from the free throw line.
Martin Methodist was led by Vee Young and Micah Anderson with 12 points each. The RedHawks shot 35 percent from the field, was 0-of-9 from behind the arc and 60 percent (15-25) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a home game on Thursday, February 10 versus Lyon (Ark.) at 6:00 p.m.
