Hudson, Ross key in road victory for No. 1 Union

LEBANON, Tenn. - 2/14/2011 - The No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University women’s basketball team posted a 62-48 win at Cumberland (Tenn.) University. Union improved to 24-1 on the season and 11-1 in the TranSouth. Cumberland dropped to 11-14 overall and 3-9 in league play.

Union jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead thanks to back-to-back three pointers from Kayla Hudson and Kayla Bryant. Union pushed their lead out to 12 points at 20-8 following another three pointer from Hudson. Union led by as many as 12 points three different times in the first half, including just before the half. A three pointer from Casie Cowan for Cumberland set the halftime score at 38-29.

In the second half, Union pushed their lead up to 14 points, 45-31 in just over two minutes of play. However, Cumberland post a 12-2 run and cut Union’s lead down to just four points, 47-43, with 12:36 left in the game.

But Union again was able to extend their lead, thanks to a 12-0 run, and with 3:45 left to play, held a 59-43 advantage. Union led by 16 points two more times in the game, before taking the 62-48 final.

Union was led by Hudson with 24 points, including 4-of-9 from long range. Lavanda Ross added 15 points and 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Union shot 47 percent from the field, 42 percent (8-19) from behind the arc and 47 percent (8-17) from the free throw line.

Cumberland was led by Cowan with 12 points and Tamara Gonzalez with eight points. Cumberland shot 31 percent from the field, 24 percent (4-17) from behind the arc and 93 percent (14-15) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be a home game on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 6:00 p.m. versus Mid-Continent (Ky.).
