JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/9/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University men’s and women’s basketball teams have both earned spots in the 2011 NAIA DI Basketball Championships. The Union women earned their tournament’s top seed, while the Union men are seeded No. 11.
No. 1 Union University Lady Bulldog Notes
Union is 12-1 this season versus teams in the 32-team national tournament field. The Union women will play Avila (Mo.) University in the first round at 8:00 p.m. on March 16. This will be the first meeting between these two teams in women’s basketball. Avila was the Heart of America Conference Tournament Champion and have a 20-12 record. This is Avila’s first trip to the NAIA DI National Tournament. Union is 31-1 on the season and has won eight straight games on the season, following their first loss of the year on Feb. 12. Union opened the season with 23 straight wins.
The Union women are making their 22nd appearance in the national tournament and 20th consecutive appearance, both NAIA records. Union also is the NAIA leader in national tournament wins with 59, just one ahead of Southern Nazarene (Okla.) who has 58 wins. Union is 59-16 in the national tournament for a .787 winning percentage. The Lady Bulldogs have been to six straight semifinals rounds, including four titles in the past six years. Union has played every possible national tournament game except two in the past six years. Union has posted a 26-2 national tournament record over the last six years. Both losses were by two points each and both on shots made in the last 10 seconds of a semifinal game to the eventual national champion. In the previous 21 appearances, Union has won five national titles (1998, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010), two runner-up finishes (1993, 1997), 11 trips to the semifinals, and 16 trips to the quarterfinals.
No. 12 Union University Bulldogs Notes
The Union Bulldogs have a 6-4 record versus teams in the 32-team national tournament field. The Union men earned an 11-seed and will play Carroll (Mont.) at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. Carroll is 22-8 on the season and is making their ninth appearances in the national tournament. They are an at-large team from the Frontier Conference and are 6-8 in national tournament games.
Union (26-6) is coming off just their third loss since Nov. 22. The Union men are making their 14th national tournament appearance and third straight. Union’s best finish was a quarterfinal appearance in both 1999 and 2007. Union has made the second round four times (1999, 2002, 2007, 2009). Union has a 7-13 (.350) record in the national tournament.
Both national tournaments will be on March 16-22. The women’s tournament will take place in Jackson, Tenn. at Oman Arena. The men’s tournament will be played in Kansas City, Mo. at Municipal Auditorium.
