JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/11/2011 - The No. 24 Union (Tenn.) University softball team won two out of three games on Friday in the Union Invitational at Fesmire Field. Union took the first game in a 4-3 win over Davenport (Mich.). The Lady Bulldogs then lost 3-1 to (RV) Central Baptist (Ark.), before taking the final game 9-7 over Davenport.
Central Baptist won their game with Davenport 7-3.
Union's record goes to 11-2 on the season. Central Baptist improved to 22-0, while Davenport dropped to 5-10.
Haliee Edwards (1-0) earned the win in relief as Union rallied in the first game for the 4-3 win over Davenport. Caroline George started and tossed 2.2 innings, allowing just one run and striking out four. Edwards tossed 2.2 innings with four strikeouts and two runs allowed. Keaton Kirk (1) earned the save with 1.2 innings of relief with one hit and one strikeout. Tobie Joy led the way with three hits and Stephanie Saunders added two hits. Shelby Lamb led with one RBI.
In the 3-1 loss to Central Baptist, Union led 1-0 on a home run from Ali Bozza. However, Central Baptist took the lead with two runs in the six and another in the seventh to win 3-1. Central Baptist got home runs from Ashley Fair and Kiara Bonner. Brooke Thomas (5-1) took her first loss of the season, going 6.1 innings and allowing the three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. Kirk got the final two outs of the seventh inning. Katie Davis led Union with two hits, both doubles.
In the last game, Union scored all nine of their runs in the second inning to lead 9-0. However, Davenport rallied with three runs in the third and four more in the fifth to make the game close. However, the combination of starter Tobie Joy (1-0) and Thomas in relief held the scored at 9-7. Union was led by CJ Browder with three hits. Joy, Davis and Saunders each added two hits. Joy's two RBI led the way for Union.
The same teams will meet again on Saturday. Union plays Davenport at 10:00 a.m., Davenport plays Central Baptist at 12:00 p.m. and Union plays Central Baptist at 2:00 p.m.
