JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/19/2011 - The Union (Tenn.) University softball posted a double-header sweep over Bethel (Tenn.) University at Fesmire Field on Tuesday. Union, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll, improved to 33-12 on the season. Bethel dropped to 17-19 overall and 12-14 in league play.

Brooke Thomas, a native of Huntingdon, Tenn., was the highlight for Union in the pitching circle. The sophomore tossed a complete game, five-inning no-hitter in the first game. She allowed one base runner in the game, coming on a walk, while striking out seven Lady Wildcats. In the second game, Thomas tossed four innings of relief to earn the win. In her four innings, she allowed just one hit with four strikeouts. Thomas improved to 17-5 with the two wins on the day.

Thomas relieved Tobie Joy, who tossed the first three innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

Offensively, Union jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Union added three runs in each the third and fourth innings. Stephanie Saunders led Union with two RBI while five other players recorded one RBI each. Saunders, CJ Browder and Miranda Mullen led with two hits each in the first game.

Game two had Union scoring again early as the Lady Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. And RBI ground out from Shelby Lamb scored Browder who walked to lead off the game. Bethel rallied with two runs in the third to take the lead. However, three runs for Union in the bottom of the third put Union up for good. Union got a solo home run from Amber Hayes and then a two run homer from Katie Davis to account for the three runs. Brittany Burkett led Union with two hits, while Davis’ two RBI were tops on the team.

This marked the final home game for Union this season. The Lady Bulldogs will play next on Thursday at Martin Methodist (Tenn.).
